With their laid-back décor and relaxed tropical style, Bali’s bohemian villas are nothing short of irresistible. It’s little wonder that Balinese interiors have sparked countless Pinterest boards and that travellers flock from far and wide simply to snap a photo in the most aesthetically pleasing of Bali’s cafes. Here, we break down the key features of Bali’s much-admired boho chic interiors!

Natural wood & reclaimed wood

Natural wood plays a big part in bohemian Balinese interiors, whether it comes to furniture or architecture. Many of the villas and buildings we consider “Balinese” are in fact Javanese in design. The open-plan wooden joglo pavilions are the traditional homes of Java, with the design widely replicated throughout Bali.

As for furniture, bohemian Balinese villas often feature beautiful wooden daybeds and sofas with plush pillows adding some comfort.

Besides using natural wood, many villas and restaurants also make use of reclaimed wood, often sourced from local fishing boats, adding a shabby chic dimension to the décor.

Exotic textiles & beautiful carpets

Textiles play a key role in creating that perfect bohemian setup. Seagrass carpets add depths and dimension into a space without being intrusive. Their neutral colour palette means they complement practically any room – even a bathroom!

If you prefer a more colourful approach, why not opt for bold bohemian patterns? You can achieve this either with oriental carpets or going more local with ikat style motifs, giving a nod to the textile traditions of Sumba island.

Indonesian textiles also work beautifully in other interior textiles. We love ikat and batik patterns in pillows, cushions, bed runners and throws!

Rattan touches

Rattan is one of the hallmarks of bohemian Balinese interiors. The material is used extensively in furniture and accessories, helping to create that dreamy island vibe we all admire so much.

Some of the trendiest pieces out there include woven lampshades which are present in many of our favourite boho chic villas and cafes in Bali.

We also love rattan seating, whether that’s a lavish daybed or a more sculpted rattan chair, which adds an elegant modern polish to the trend.

Plants & greenery

Earth tones play a key role in creating these bohemian interiors. But there is no denying the effect that some tropical greenery can have on a space!

Bali’s tropical climate lends itself to open air living and many properties include a semi-open design which allows the garden to thrive indoors.

If you’re looking to replicate the look at home, there is no need to knock over a wall. Adding a few houseplants will do wonders in adding a bohemian touch to any space. For a low maintenance take on the trend, opt for cacti.
